Amulets for sea travel. The gifts of lovers. A union of the inner male and female. Fertile waters. Waxing and waning tides, moons, emotions. Ancient Roman sea caves. The birth of Venus. Soft flesh and salt water. Pearl diver’s nets. Reflection. Mystery. Gentleness.
This idea of ours has been simmering on the back stove for sometime now, and when I began speaking with my friend and artist, Lauren Spencer King, this past summer, about working on a collection of pieces that would embody a deeper story, exploring the personal connection between object and owner.....well...this piece finally had its home.
Lockets have their history steeped in the tradition of amulets. This idea of protection, of a keepsake, of love has found many incarnations throughout jewelry. It's the perfect vehicle after all. Our version brings one of our favorite elements front and center: stone.
Lauren, with her business Fields of Study, provides you with beautiful descriptions and histories of the stones in your choice. We've carefully curated four stone combinations to choose from. You may be struck by how the one which most visually resonates with you also strikes a chord when delved into deeper...
Jade ~ When jade is struck it is thought to emit a peculiarly melodious sounds, resembling the voice of the loved one: indeed, jade is termed the concentrate essence of love. This stone is the ultimate when it comes to facilitating peace within the physical, emotional, and intellectual structures, as well as within the materialistic world. Wellbeing. Cohesion. Oneness.
Carnelian ~ A stone which is a traditional offering of love, and with each offering of love it exponentially increases the quantity of love returned. Said by the Lapidario of Alfonso X to bring courage. It's name refers to "flesh". Sensual. Creative. Passionate.
Pearl ~ Pearls are created from an irritant, a grain of sand or other foreign matter that finds its way inside. As a means of protection the oyster builds up material around it, which over time forms into a beautiful pearl. They are a metaphor for our relationship with the uncomfortable or difficult. They teach us to transform what we do not want into something beautiful, to use as an asset what we want to reject. Pearls enhance personal integrity, and are the stone of sincerity. Faith. Charity. Innocence.
Onyx ~ Historically onyx has been used for carving magic amulets. It promotes inner strength and self mastery. Connects one to the earth, particularly through the feet and up to one's sexual energy, allowing for the connection to one's intuition and a feeling of being guided. Pure magical force. Grounding. Purpose.
As with all stone pieces, each has its natural variances. Please allow for subtle differences.
